UW-Whitewater women win in OT

— UW-Whitewater survived a tough battle with upset-minded UW-La Crosse for a 99-87 overtime victory in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women’s basketball here Wednesday night.

Third-ranked Whitewater (18-1, 8-1) led 74-62 with eight minutes left in regulation. The upstart Eagles (9-10, 4-6) then smacked the Warhawks with a 14-0 run to take a 76-74 lead with four minutes remaining.


Whitewater clawed back to tie it, 81-81, on Lindsey Buechner’s two free throws with 70 seconds left.


In the overtime, Whitewater gained an 17-5 advantage by making 11 of 17 free throws to seal the victory.


Buechner scored a season-high 24 points, passing DeAnne Lehman (1984-88, 1,050) for fifth place on Whitewater’s career scoring list with 1,064 points. Buechner scored 19 points in the second half.


Whitewater’s Kelsey Hendrickson scored seven of her 20 points in the overtime, while Beloit Memorial graduate Tiffany Morton had a 20-point game for the Warhawks.


Whitewater hosts UW-Eau Claire in a battle for a share of the WIAC lead at 3 p.m. Saturday.
