January 25, 2008
— The University of Wisconsin women’s basketball agony came to a resounding end—at least for a night.

After four straight Big Ten losses, including three by six points or less, the Badgers broke out the doldrums Thursday night by whipping Penn State, 79-52, before a season-high crowd of 5,849.

In notching the program’s 100th win at the 10-year-old Kohl Center, Wisconsin improved to 2-6 in the conference and 9-9 overall.

Janese Banks, Jolene Anderson and Lin Zastrow, the freshman standout from Jefferson, led the way with 16 points apiece. Rae Lin D’Alie added 13.

Wisconsin made 15 of 32 field-goal attempts in racing to a 36-19 halftime lead. The Badgers held Penn State (13-7, 4-4) to 7-for-26 shooting during that stretch, and the UW momentum carried into the second half.

Zastrow’s defensive presence in the middle altered Penn State’s shots throughout the game. Banks’ defense, which was established with a steal on the game’s first possession, also was a huge part of the Badgers’ success.

Wisconsin’s 27-point win was its largest margin in a Big Ten game since defeating Northwestern by 24 on Jan. 21, 2007.

Brianne O’Rourke led Penn State with 14 points.

The Badgers continue their two-game homestand when face Northwestern at 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
