Unbeaten Bluebirds outlast Kettle Moraine/Mukwonago
Don’t get complacent.
Janesville’s co-op high school team opened up a three-goal lead but had to hang on for a 3-2 nonconference win over Kettle Moraine/Mukwonago at the Janesville Ice Skating Center.
The Lasers (8-5) scored with 31 seconds left to pull within one and were the more aggressive team the second and third periods.
Fortunately for the Bluebirds (11-0-2), David Jacobson’s stellar play in goal was enough to keep their unbeaten streak intact.
Janesville coach John Mauermann said his team’s stagnant play over the final two periods was more a reflection of the Lasers.
“I think you have to give our opponent credit,” Mauermann said. “They didn’t get off the bus in the first period, and luckily enough, we got out on a couple of breaks and finished.
“After that, they made some adjustments and forced the action for a little bit.”
The Bluebirds went on the attack early and it paid off. Janesville Parker junior Ross Mauermann got his team-leading 12th goal at 6:28 on an assist from Janesville Craig junior Derek Mussey. Mauermann took a pass at the blue line, raced in on goalie Colin Robinson and beat him on his stick side.
Parker sophomore Aaron Jacobson then tied Mauermann for the team lead in goals by blasting a shot past Robinson at 8:15 of the first period for his 12th goal. Mussey started the play in the Janesville end, shot a pass to Joe Allen, who then found a streaking Jacobson.
“That’s what is interesting about a good season,” coach Mauermann said. “Sometimes good things happen when you continue to work hard. Both of those goals were a matter of staying with the play and outworking the opponent for the puck.”
Craig junior Zach Bayreuther got his 10th goal of the season at 5:31 of the second period to make it 3-0. With Janesville on the power play, Mauermann fed Bayreuther on the right face-off circle, and he blasted a shot that trickled past Robinson.
David Jacobson made three breakaway saves the first two periods, but the Lasers finally got a shot past him at 10:20 of the second. Sam Frank scored on a Laser power play to cut the lead to 3-1 as Jacobson got screened on the shot.
Neither team scored in the third period until Jordan Rogala got the Lasers’ second power- play goal with 31 seconds left to play. Kettle Moraine/Mukwonago pulled Robinson in the last 31 seconds to get an extra attacker on the ice, but the Lasers couldn’t get off a quality shot.
“Last year, we outplayed these guys and had nothing to show for it,” coach Mauermann said of a WIAA tournament loss to the Lasers. “Give our kids credit. We did enough tonight to win the game.”
