— Janesville public school teachers plan to picket Saturday on Milton Avenue near the Janesville Mall.

“The picket is meant to inform the public of the current situation facing the students and teachers in the School District of Janesville,” according to a news release.

“The picket comes after members of the Janesville Education Association and the School District of Janesville failed to reach an agreement” on the 2007-09 teachers contract, the news release states.

Teachers are working under the terms of their old contract, which expired July 1.

The two sides had been considering a date of Feb. 15 to take their arguments to a state mediator.

Dave Parr, co-lead negotiator for the union, said the union’s lawyer can’t meet on that date, but the union is asking the lawyer to move up the date to “as soon as possible.”

Union members also plan to attend the next school board meeting in large numbers, Parr said. The meeting is on Tuesday, Feb. 12.
