— Regional employers will reap the benefits of a new partnership between the UW-Whitewater and Indiana University at Bloomington providing valuable safety and health training in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Indiana.

The partnership results in the Heartland Safety and Health Education Center, an Occupational Safety and Health Administration Training Institute Education Center. The center is one of eight newly selected by OSHA through a national competition. Organizations were evaluated on occupational safety and health experience, continuing education background, classroom and laboratory availability and the ability to provide training throughout a region.

E. Andrew Kapp said the UW-Whitewater site is the first of its kind in Wisconsin. Kapp is an associate professor in the Occupational and Environmental Safety and Health department at UW-Whitewater and will serve as the associate director of the new center.

As a member of the Heartland Safety and Health Education Center, Kapp and other faculty members of UW-Ws OESH department will work with Indiana University faculty to develop courses. Kapp anticipates that the first Wisconsin offering of occupational safety and health courses will occur in summer 2008.
