After a first-quarter disaster, Orfordville Parkiew High School found new life in the Rock Valley boys basketball race Tuesday night.

The Vikings trailed 22-8 after the first period, then rallied from a 12-point halftime deficit and cruised to a 72-53 victory over Big Foot at Walworth.

In snapping a two-game losing streak, Parkview (10-3) remained tied for second place with Evansville and pulled within a half-game of front-running Edgerton (12-1, 7-1) at 7-2 in conference play. That sets up a first-place showdown with the Crimson Tide on Friday night at Orfordville.

Big Foot (4-11, 3-6) used balanced scoring to grab the early lead over Parkview, but Phil Wellnitz took charge in the second half to deny the Chiefs’ upset bid. The 6-2 senior scored 16 of his game-high 24 points in a 25-6 third quarter that carried the Vikings from a 40-28 halftime deficit to a 53-46 lead.

Wellnitz added six more points in a 19-7 fourth quaerter that made it a runaway victory for the Vikings, who ultimately prevailed with a 22-5 advantage in free throws.

Sophomore guard Nick Melton backed up Wellnitz with 20 points for Parkview, and teammate Wes Piper added 12. Steve Oja and T.J. Schaid led Big Foot with 11 and 10, respectively.
