— The top two teams in the Big Eight Conference squared off Saturday night and nothing was settled.

Janesville’s Zach Bayreuther scored 42 seconds into the third period to tie the game at 3-3, and that’s where the score stayed as the Janesville Bluebirds and Middleton skated to a tie at the Capitol Ice Rink.

Janesville’s fourth-ranked high school co-op team is now 10-0-2 on the season, and more important, remained a game ahead in the Big Eight with a 7-0-1 record. Middleton is 7-1-1 in the league and 11-2-1 overall.

Believing his team outplayed the host Cardinals for most of the game, Janesville coach John Mauermann was disappointed with the tie.

“All three Middleton goals were fluke goals, but those things happen,” Janesville coach John Mauermann said. “We pounded them repeatedly on the power play but just couldn’t finish.

“It’s frustrating because I thought we outplayed them for three periods. But we knew we were going to come out of this building still in first place. As it turns out, we still have a little bit of a cushion.”

Middleton took a 2-1 lead in the first period on a pair of goals from Casey Kelso, but Janesville tied it late in the period on Aaron Jacobson’s power play goal on assists from Bayreuther and Derek Mussey.

After the Cardinals scored the lone goal of the second period, the Bluebirds tied it once again on Bayreuther’s slap shot on an assist from Michael Valentine.

Both teams had excellent scoring chances in the extra session. Janesville’s David Jacobson made a spectacular save on a Middleton 2-on-1, and Middleton’s Alex Strassman denied Ross Mauermann later in the overtime.

“We had a 5-on-3 in the third period with a chance to go ahead and had nothing to show for it,” coach Mauermann said.

“Middleton’s a much better team than what we saw earlier in the year. And that tells you how well we’re playing right now because I really thought we controlled play throughout.”

David Jacobson finished with 32 saves for the Bluebirds, while Strassman stopped 40 shots.
