— The beat goes on for the Janesville Bluebirds.

Janesville’s high school co-op hockey team ran its unbeaten streak to 11 on Tuesday night with a 4-1 win in a Big Eight Conference game at Sun Prairie.

Derek Mussey and Bentle Geldard each scored a goal and an assist as the fourth-ranked Bluebirds improved to 10-0-1 overall and 7-0 in the conference.

“David (Jacobson) made some big saves for us early on, and then things started bouncing our way,” Janesville coach John Mauermann said. “We got up by three goals, and even though Sun Prairie played hard and battled, we did a nice job of playing with the lead.

“We moved the puck well on the power play, and Bentle’s goal after Sun Prairie cut the lead to two was a big goal. That gave us a cushion to play with again.”

Jacobson, a Janesville Parker junior who finished with 26 saves, kept the Cardinals (2-12, 2-7) off the board early with two impressive saves.

Janesville Craig junior Derek Mussey scored for the Bluebirds at 10:02 of the first period with a power-play goal. Craig senior Tommy Tralmer made it 2-0 less than two minutes later on assists from Sly Flynn and Mussey. Parker sophomore Aaron Jacobson made it 3-0 less than a minute later on an assist from Geldard.

“We just started getting the bounces,” Mauermann said. “One of our goals went off a shin guard and another one off the goalie’s stick. But to have a chance, you have to get the puck on net, and we were able to do that.”

After the Cardinals cut the lead to 3-1 late in the first, Geldard finished the scoring at 15:47 of the second period,

With a one-game lead in the Big Eight, the Bluebirds will travel to second-place Middleton (6-1) on Saturday night. Janesville beat Middleton earlier in the season, 5-1 but Mauermann knows the Cardinals will be tough on their home ice.

“It should be an outstanding high school hockey game,” Mauermann said. “Middleton’s got a nice team, and I’m sure they feel like they owe us after we handled them at our place.

“We’re playing well, and we’ll be ready.”
