— UW-Whitewater’s women’s basketball team suffered its first loss in 15 games, falling 63-60 top UW-Eau Claire in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game here Saturday.

The second-ranked Warhawks fall to 14-1 and 5-1 in the WIAC race. Whitewater trails Eau Claire (11-3, 5-0) by a half-game for the league lead.

“We knew we were not going to go undefeated,” Warhawks’ coach Keri Carollo said. “This was an eye-opener for us, it’s all about doing the little things that make the difference in a close game.”

The Warhawks rallied from a 29-19 halftime deficit to build a 52-45 lead on a Nicole Bunde jumper with 5 minutes to play.

Whitewater maintained the lead until the Eau Claire went ahead for good on a Michelle Burns’ layup and free throw for a 61-59 lead with 1:26 to play.

Tiffany Morton made 1 of 2 free throws with eight seconds remaining to pull Whitewater within 61-60. Morton’s free throws were Whitewater’s only scoring opportunities down the stretch.

Whitewater’s Kelsey Hendrickson and Lindsey Buechner scored 11 points apiece.
