UW-Whitewater’s unbeaten women’s basketball team remained on a roll in its return to WIAC action.


The Warhawks, No. 2 in the D3hoops.com national ratings, ran their record to 13-0 and stayed atop the WIAC at 4-0 by blowing out UW-River Falls, 86-54, Saturday.


Heidi Sonntag ignited visiting Whitewater with 27 points, the Warhawks’ season high. The sophomore guard made five of six three-point shots and 10 of 11 free throws.


Sonntag connected on all three of her three-point attempts in a 16-point first half, while leading Whitewater to a 41-24 cushion.


River Falls rallied in the second half and stayed within 11 points as late as 49-38 with less than 13 minutes remaining. Nicole Bundy, Rachel Woolever and Lindsey Buechner then sparked a 14-2 surge that put the Warhawks out of reach at 63-40.


Woolever, who made four of eight three-point shots, and Bundy each finished with 12 points. The Warhawks wound up with 11 three-pointers, tying a school record that had been accomlished three previous times.


Senior guard Jana Benitz led River Falls (6-7, 0-4) with 18 points.


In extending its best-ever start to a season, Whitewater moved within five of the school-record 18-game winning srtreak, which was set in 1985-86.


The Warhawks return home to face UW-La Crosse at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
