UW-Whitewater fought off an upset-minded UW-River Falls for an 88-82 overtime victory in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men’s basketball Saturday.

With the victory, visiting Whitewater (10-2, 3-1) moved into a WIAC first-place tie with UW-Oshkosh and UW-Platteville after Oshkosh lost to UW-Stevens Point.

River Falls (7-6, 1-3) whittled away the Warhawks’ 48-30 early second-half lead to tie it 74-74 in regulation on Kelly Scott’s three-point basket with three seconds remaining.

Despite the change in momentum, the Warhawks never trailed. Senior forward Rob Perry scored five points in the overtime and Matt Goodwin added four as Whitewater posted a 14-8 advantage for the victory.

Perry finished with 23 points. Goodwin added 22 and teammate Myles McKay chipped in 15. Janesville Craig graduate Josh King scored six points in 38 minutes on the floor.

Whitewater plays at UW-La Crosse at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
