— Things continue to come easily for Siven Furseth.

The Janesville Craig High School freshman ran his season record to 23-0 with three more wins Saturday en route to the 103-pound title at the Craig Invitational.

The Cougars, thanks to titles from Blair Kessler, Alex Burdick and Boyd Maske in the last three weight classes, nearly jumped from fourth to first in the championship round but came up two points short. Elkhorn won the eight-team title with 180, and Craig was second with 178.

The fourth-ranked Furseth rolled through his bracket. He picked up pins in his first two matches before dominating Oak Creek’s Jake Hince, 17-2, in the title bout.

Furseth has burst onto the high school wrestling scene by manhandling every opponent. He allowed only two points in three matches Saturday in winning his third tournament title of the season.

“I’ve been able to stay on my feet each match, and that has allowed me to stay in control,” Furseth said.

“I’m kind of surprised with how well I’ve done because a lot of the guys I’m wrestling are older than me. All I’m trying to do is go out and get pins for the team to give us as many points as I can.”

Kessler boosted his season mark to 20-5 with a strong run through the 189-pound class. The senior pinned his first two opponents, including top-seeded Aaron Nelson of Oregon in the semifinal match, and then dominated Lee Hoskins of Elkhorn, 15-1, in the title bout.

After starting the season at 215, Kessler has moved down to 189. The move has paid big dividends.

“I played football at about 220, and I’ve lost about 30 pounds since then,” Kessler said. “It’s nice to be wrestling guys my own size now than what I was going up against early in the season.

“I just try to come out and dictate the match right away. I want to be the hunter and not the hunted. I wrestle better when I do that.”

Burdick and Maske nearly helped the Cougars pull off the impossible by getting pins in their title bouts. Craig stood in fourth place after the semifinal round, but four champions later the Cougars were within two points of the team title.

Maske was the only wrestler in the 14 weight classes to win all three of his matches by pin. The third-seeded Maske improved to 12-5 for the season by winning the 285-pound title, including a first period pin of Cambridge’s Luke Deutsch in the championship match.

Burdick, a sophomore, moved his season record to 12-7 by winning the 215-pound class. Burdick won his quarterfinal match by decision before pinning his final two opponents. In the title match, Burdick flattened Beloit Turner’s Kyle Decker in 4:47.

Elkhorn hung on for the team title, thanks to championships from Ryan Slack at 119 and Jeremiah Potter at 140.

Turner’s Lucas Clark won the 160-pound class with a 2-1 win in the title match over Marcus Schickel of Cambridge.
