— The free throw line was not kind to Janesville Parker’s boys basketball team Friday night.

The Vikings missed 20 of 26 attempts from the line en route to a 62-48 loss to Madison West in Big Eight Conference action.

Parker (2-7, 0-6) cut the lead to six with two minutes remaining, but West’s Michael Horton made six straight free throws to help the Regents pull away. The Vikings misfired on 10 of 12 fourth-quarter free throws.

“It’s not like we don’t work on them in practice,” Parker coach Jim LeMire said of shooting free throws. “We make half of those and it’s a different game.

“Plus, we had way too many unforced turnovers. Taking care of the basketball has given us problems in every one of our losses, and tonight was no different.”

West (5-4, 3-3) jumped out to a 14-point lead after the first quarter and led 35-24 at halftime.

Parker’s Riley Grafft led all scorers with 28 points, including 16 in the first half. The 6-foot-10 Grafft also had a game-high 18 rebounds.

“Riley worked hard tonight and was rewarded for it,” LeMire said. “The problem is that we needed someone else to step up as well. Riley had 16 of our 24 points in the first half.

“Other than Riley, we didn’t play very well in the first half. But we responded with a good effort, and had a chance to make it closer if we would’ve made our free throws.”

Horton led the Regents with 23 points and Corvonn Gaines added 15.

Parker will host Sun Prairie at 7:45 tonight.
