Craig girls dominate East
After sweeping two games in their holiday tournament, the Cougars kept the momentum going by pouncing on Madison East in a 19-5 first quarter here Thursday night.
Craig High carried that to a 36-14 halftime lead and went on to 53-26 victory in its return to Big Eight Conference play.
“We played great defense overall and had a really good press,’’ Craig coach Mark Marsden after his Cougars improved to 4-3 in the conference and 6-4 overall. “We were able to play a lot of kids, and they all played well.’’
Danielle Straw and Kristi Benson were particularly sharp for the Cougars in scoring 15 and 13 points, respectively. Benson had eight in the first quarter, while sparking Craig’s 17-0 start, and Straw had seven in a 17-9 second period that widened the gap.
“It was good to see Danielle break out of her slump,’’ Marsden said. “She played a complete game.’’
Benson got all her points in the first half, and six others helped Straw carry it from there.
Craig’s only shortcoming was a four-minute scoring drought to start the second half, but the Cougars’ defense came to the rescue, and they never were danger against the winless Purgolders (0-8, 0-6).
“Our defense played stellar all night,’’ Marsden said.
The Cougars will shoot for a fourth straight win at home Tuesday in a 5:45 p.m. tip-off of a Big Eight co-ed doubleheader against Madison La Follette. The boys play at 7:30.
Craig’s nonconference game against visiting Campbellsport, which was postponed Dec. 11, will be made up at 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12.
