Cougars easily pin down Regents
Starting at 215 pounds, Craig got pins from Blair Kessler, Boyd Maske (285), Siven Furseth (103) and Jamie Kumlein (112). Craig is now 3-3 in the Big Eight.
“We got the ball rolling right away with Blair in the first match, and that gave us the momentum,” Craig coach Jeff Kaster said. “West surprised me, though. They were much tougher than I expected them to be.”
Furseth, the state’s fourth-ranked wrestler in Division 1, improved to 19-0 with a pin in 26 seconds. Kumlein, another freshman, pinned his opponent in 1:13 to give the Cougars a comfortable 24-0 lead.
Other Craig winners scoring pins included Travis Davis at 130, Alex Kaster at 152 and Trevor Gregoire at 171. Brandon Krause had a technical fall at 140.
Craig will host an eight-team invitational today. Also competing are Racine Case, Beloit Turner, Burlington, Oregon, Elkhorn, Cambridge and Oak Creek. Finals are expected to begin around 3 p.m.
“There will be some quality teams competing, and a number of state-ranked individuals, as well,” Kaster said. “It’s always a great tournament.”
