Milton nips Purple Knights in overtime

Milton High fought off adversity and feisty Beloit Memorial in beginning its bid for a return to the girls WIAA state basketball tournanent.


The Red Hawks played without 6-2 freshman center Liz Eide, who was sidelined with a knee injury, but Tasha Randall took control in scoring 27 points to lead a 59-57 overtime victory over the Purple Knights in a Division 1 regional semifinal thriller Tuesday night.


Milton (14-7), which reached the state quarterfinals last year, moved on to a regional title game at 7 p.m. Saturday at Kenosha Tremper against the second-seeded Trojans (18-2). The winner plays Elkhorn (12-9) or Verona (15-6) in the Wilmot Sectional.


Beloit senior Bryanna Bolton hit a three-point shot with eight seconds left to force a 49-49 tie and the overtime at Milton. Randall then scored eight of her team’s 10 points in the extra period to spark the Red Hawks’ winning surge.


Randall, a 5-8 senior forward, had a pair of three-point plays to highlight her overtime scoring. Katie Groeschel got the winning points on a pair of free throws that broke a 57-57 tie in the closing seconds.


The Red Hawks blocked Beloit’s attempt for a three-point shot with three seconds left to preserve their eighth straight victory.


Amber Davis backed up Randall with 10 points for Milton. Alexia Tann had 18 for Beloit (8-12), and Bolton added 12, all on four three-point goals.

Elkhorn 67, Burlington 56—Elkhorn (12-9) outscored the visiting Demons (5-16) in every quarter to win a Division 1 regional opener.


The sixth-seeded Elks play at third-seeded Verona (15-6) in Saturday’s regional title game. The winner advances to the Wilmot Sectional.


After the Elks took a 15-9 lead into second quarter, Ashlyn Anderson scored 13 of her game-high 29 points as Elkhorn extended its advantage to 34-25 by halftime.


Brianna Entwistle kept the Elks in control with 14 of her 19 points in an 18-14 third quarter.


Elkhorn’s Micaela McDonald added 13 points, while Catie Grandi scored 22 for Burlington.

Central 54, Badger 53—Christina Brinkman scored off the rebound of her missed free throw with 17.4 seconds left to give Lakeshore champion Westosha Central (16-5) a Division 1 regional semifinal win over Lake Geneva Badger (6-15).


Brinkman scored 16 points. Melissa Toldeo and Leah Rempert led Badger with 18 and 17, respectively.


Central plays at Janesville Craig (14-7) in the regional finals at 4 p.m. Saturday. The winner advances to the Wilmot Sectional.

Oregon 60, Wilmot 37—Oregon (11-10) built a 32-21 advantage in the first half to win a Division 1 regional semifinal battle of Panthers.


Kayla Crowley scored nine of her 11 points in the first half, while Bryn Anderson and Erika Gundlach added 10 apiece for Oregon. Jackie Herman scored 10 points for Wilmot (9-11).


Oregon plays at third-ranked Janesville Parker (18-2) in a regional title game at 1 p.m. Saturday. The winner faces Janesville Craig (14-7) or Westosha Central (16-5) in the semifinals of the Wilmot Sectional.

Verona 63, Stoughton 46—Verona (15-6) had more than enough firepower to withstand Brianna Bower’s 26 points for Stoughton (2-19) in a Division 1 regional semifinal game.


Aly Bucierka, a 5-5 junior, led the way with 24 points as the Wildcats built a 32-20 halftime lead and finished off the Vikings in a 17-10 fourth quarter.


Leslie Schaefer and Sadie Ewing added 14 and 12 points, respectively, for Verona.


The Wildcats host Elkhorn (12-9) in Saturday’s regional finals.

West 41, Memorial 34—Madison West (11-10) used a 12-5 advantage in the third quarter in pulling away from Madison Memorial (6-15) for a Division 1 regional semifinal win.


Ellie Pearson and Katie Poffenberger scored 12 points each to lead West. Alicia Evans paced the Spartans with 13.


West plays at Holmen in Saturday’s regional finals. The winner advances to the Baraboo Secitonal.

The Lancers trailed 21-8 at halftime but outscored the Goslings 28-15 in the second half to force the first overtime.


Sydney Temple paced the Lancers with 15 points.
