— A 24-year-old Beloit man led sheriff’s deputies on a high-speed chase early Sunday before crashing his vehicle, injuring himself and his passenger, according to a press release from the Rock County Sheriff’s Department.

According to the release:

A deputy attempted to stop a 1994 maroon Saturn traveling erratically at 3:57 a.m. The car, which authorities say was driven by Wayne A. Zimdars, was westbound on Beloit/Rock Townline Road west of County J.

The car was weaving from ditch line to ditch line. The deputy activated his squad’s emergency lights and siren, but the car fled south on Prairie Road at high speed. The driver failed to yield to the deputy’s lights and sirens and almost collided with another vehicle.

The near collision caused the driver of the fleeing vehicle to lose control. The car slid off the east side of Prairie Road, struck a large tree and landed on its roof in the intersection of Prairie Road and Vail Terrace.

Zimdars and his passenger, Ann M. Zimdars, 21, Janesville, were ejected. Both were treated and released at Beloit Memorial Hospital.

Wayne Zimdars was arrested on a charge of causing injury by drunken driving and other related traffic offenses.

The pursuit lasted about three minutes, covering about 3 miles.

The Beloit Police Department is handling the accident investigation.
