— Middleton High School dominated the WIAA Division 1 Middleton sectional gymnastics meet, but Janesville Craig stayed close enough to finish second and qualify for a state tournament berth here Friday.

The Cardinals, who won the Big Eight dual meet and conference meet titles, earned 142.775 points while Craig posted 132.6 points. Janesville Parker finished fifth with 121.675 points.

The two top teams, the first five individuals in each event and the top three all around finishers qualify for the state meet next Friday and Saturday at Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln High School.

Katharine Cullen, a sophomore, finished fifth in the floor exercise (8.925), fourth on balance beam (8.9) and fifth in the all-around (34.825) to lead the Cougars to their state berth.

Cullen qualified as an individual for state last season in the floor exercise and beam.

“I guess I’m just really proud of all the girls,” Craig coach Jean Welch said. “I’m proud of the way they stepped up. The whole team competed really well.”

Welch said the Cougars performed well on the first event, and the momentum carried through the rest of the meet.

“We started on beam, which is hard to do,” said Welch. “We stuck our routines and we kept going from there.’’

Meanwhile, Janesville Parker freshman Erika Whitson qualified for her first state meet as an individual in two events. Whitson tied with Middleton’s Claire Flickinger for third place in the floor exercise, each with a 9.025. Whitson finished fourth in the uneven bars with an 8.775.

“Erika had a good routine on the uneven bars, and really put together a great floor exercise routine,” Parker coach Cathy Lehmann said. “She also just missed making it in the all-around, and on beam.

“She has a great ceiling in gymnastics because she strives for perfection,” Lehmann said. “Erika’s very coachable and continues to get better.”
