Badger, Elkhorn, East Troy advance to sectionals

When the game was on the line, Lake Geneva Badger’s boys basketball team was up to the task Saturday aftenoon.


Badger High connected on 10 of 14 free throws in the fourth quarter and held off Stoughton, 57-54, in a WIAA Division 1 regional final at Lake Geneva.


The Badgers (16-5), who won the Lakeshore Conference championship, play Janesville Craig (17-5) in a sectional semifinal game at 8 p.m. Friday at Elkhorn.


While collecting six times from beyond the arc, Badger withstood Stoughton’s 11 three-point goals. Malcolm Calbert had five for the Vikings, and Jake Theirmann added three.


Braden Tice, who had four three-point goals, led Badger with 17 points. Jimmy Merritt made seven of eight free throws and scored 15 points, while Kevin Wieters finished with 12.


Calbert had 18 points to lead Stoughton, was was outscored 14-1 free-throw line.

Verona 72, Milton 52—The Red Hawks (12-10) trailed 18-4 after the first quarter and couldn’t recover in a Division 1 regional final at Verona.


Top-seeded Verona (17-4), a state qualifier the last two years, plays Elkhorn (18-4) in the sectional semifinals at 6 p.m. Friday at Elkhorn.


Jason Ziemer scored 15 of his 22 points in the first half as the Wildcats rolled to a 37-23 lead.


Milton’s Mason Walters scored 15 points and was the only Red Hawk in double figures.

Elkhorn 51, Tremper 31—Elkhorn (18-4) struck quickly in a 20-3 first quarter for a Division 1 championship win over visiting Kenosha Tremper (10-12).


The Elks advance to their sectional and host top-seeded Verona (17-4) in the semifinals at 6 p.m. Friday.


Elkhorn drilled Tremper with all four of its three-point goals in the big first quarter, during which Eric Bryson scored 11 of his game-high 23 points.


Max Findreng backed up Bryson with 12 points for the Elks.

Memorial 84, West 62—Second-ranked Madison Memorial (19-2) began its quest for a fifth straight trip to the state tournament by walloping Madison West (11-11) for the third time this season in a Division 1 regional championship.


The Spartans face Watertown (18-4) in the sectional semifinals Friday at Middleton.


Memorial’s Jeronne Maymon scored 18 of his game-high 28 points in the first half.

La Follette 77, DeForest 48—Madison La Follette (16-6) broke away in a 42-23 second half to bury the Norskies (11-11) in a Division 2 regional championship game.


The Lancers plays Waunakee (22-0) in the sectional semifinals Friday at Middleton.


Cashton Craig scored eight of his 168 points for La Follette in a 18-12 first quarter that gave the Lancers for good.


Chris Redman was La Follette’s game leader with 16.

East Troy 64, Whitnall 42—Top-ranked East Troy (20-2) flexed its muscles early en route to a Division 2 regional title victory over Whitnall (14-8) at Wilmot.


The Trojans play Madison Edgewood (12-10) at 7 p.m. Friday at Janesville Parker in the semifinals of the Sun Prairie Sectional.


Alan Loth led the Trojans with 20 points. Kyle Jones added 19, Alex Bondar had 13.

Edgewood 60, Lakeside 56—Lakeside Lutheran’s final surge wasn’t quite enough against Madison Edgewood in a Division 2 regional title game at Watertown.


The Crusaders (12-10) advanced to the Sun Prairie Sectional and a semifinal game at 7 p.m. Friday against top-ranked East Troy (20-2) at Janesville Parker.


Edgewood took temporary control against Lakeside (19-4) in a 14-3 second quarter for a 31-21 halftime lead. The Crusaders still led by 12 with just over three minutes left in the game, but Justin Eternick and Nate Beaver each hit three-point goals to spark a Lakeside comeback.


Lakeside got within 58-56 and had the ball in the final minute, but a turnover and an Edgewood free throw made it 59-56 with eight seconds left. The Warriors couldn’t connect on a game-tying three-pointer, and Edgewood added another free throw in the last second to complete the scoring.


Eternick took scoring honors with 19 points, and Bauer had 16. Derek Baught led Edgewood with 16.

Burlington Central 70, Williams Bay 56—The Hilltoppers (16-7) peppered the Trailways South champion Bulldogs (20-3) with 12 three-point goals en route to a Division 4 regional championship.


Williams Bay, ranked ninth in the final AP Division 4 poll, led 20-18 after the first quarter, but was outscored 15-6 in the second quarter to trail 33-26 at halftime.


Central’s Robert Aldrich scored a game-high 23 points, including five three-point goals. Andrew Martin scored 17 points for Williams Bay, and teammate Jack Slovick added 16.


Central plays defending state champion Randolph (22-1) at 7 p.m. Friday at Beaver Dam in the semifinals of the Fort Atkinson Sectional.
