Whitewater, Jefferson get revenge in tourney play

Whitewater High’s boys basketball team made the third time count against Southern Lakes rival Delavan-Darien.


The visiting Whippets made six free throws down the stretch Tuesday night and avenged two regular-season losses with a 49-39 victory over the Comets in a WIAA Division 2 regional opener.


That gave Whitewater (11-10) a third shot at top-ranked and top-seeded East Troy (18-2) in a regional semifinal game Thursday on the Trojans’ court. The winner plays Union Grove (11-10) or Whitnall (13-7) at 1 p.m. Saturday at Wilmot for the regional title and a berth in the Sun Prairie Sectional.


Delavan-Darien (11-10) trailed 33-26 after three quarter but still was within five points with two minutes remaining. The Whippets sealed the victory from the free-throw line.


Miles Hookstead led a balanced Whitewater attack with 19 points, while Tony Bilderback added 11 and Mark Zweifel had 10. Myles Osswald paced the Comets.

Union Grove 74, Big Foot 59—Union Grove (11-10) pulled away in a 23-11 fourth quarter for a Division 2 regional win over the visiting Chiefs (6-15).


The Broncos play at top-seeded Whitnall (13-7) in Thursday’s regional semifinals.


Mike Ledger scored 10 of his 14 points for Union Grove in the decisive fourth quarter against Big Foot. Nick Bauer had 13 points, including three three-point goals in a 20-15 first quarter that gave Union Grove the edge, but the Broncos led only 51-48 after three periods.


Bauer finished with four three-pointers and 22 points. Steve Dowden and Nathan Nagel paced Big Foot with 14 apiece.

Jefferson 60, Fort Atkinson 52—The fifth-seeded Eagles (4-17) avenged two regular- season losses to arch-rival Fort Atkinson (7-14) and will play top-seeded Edgewood (10-10) at Madison in the Division 2 regional semifinals.


Thursday’s winner faces Lakeside Lutheran (18-3) or Lake Mills (13-8) in a regional title game at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Watertown. The winner advances to the Sun Prairie Sectional.


Josh Alvarado led Jefferson past Fort Atkinson with a game-high 20 points, including a three-pointer to give the Eagles a 44-42 lead they never relinquished. Alvarado hit all four of his three-point attempts.


Trevor Probst went 6-for-7 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter to back up Alvarado with 17 points. Ten of Probst’s points came in the final period.


John Kotz led four Blackhawks in double figures with 12 points. Jacob Enslin and Dan Malison had 11 points apiece. Reid Hitt had 10.

Lakeside 78, Columbus 49—Lakeside (18-3) pulled away from a 38-30 halftime lead in a 26-8 third quarter to complete a three-game sweep of Capitol Conference rival Columbus (1-20).


The Warriors’ victory advanced the Capitol North champions to a Division 2 regional semifinal game at home Thursday against local rival Lake Mills (13-8), a 58-41 winner over Lodi.


Nate Bauer scored nine of his 11 points for Lakeside in the decisive third quarter. Cole Strohbusch had eight of his 11.


Justin Eternick was Lakeside’s game leaders 16 points.
