New Glarus upsets Parkview; Bay advances

New Glarus High School’s boys basketball team pulled off one of the early surprises in WIAA tournament play.


The fifth-seeded Glarner Knights upset fourth-seeded Parkview, 60-49, in a Division 3 regional opener Tuesday night at Orfordville.


While the Vikings’ season ended at 15-6, New Glarus (10-11) earned a spot in Thursday’s regional semifinals. The Glarners play at top-seeded Cuba City (17-3) in a game that pairs into the Baraboo Sectional.


New Glarus took command against Parkview with an 18-6 run in the third quarter after leading 27-26 at halftime.


Junior Jeremy Langfoss led New Glarus with 12 points. Jake Bast added 11, and Cassidy Flannery had 10.


Alex Mumm scored a game-high 23 points for Parkview.

Darlington 52, Turner 43—The third-seeded Redbirds (13-8) made 10 of 16 free throws in the fourth quarter to defeat No. 6 seed Beloit Turner (8-12) in a Division 3 regional opener at Darlington.


Darlington led 27-26 after three quarters and gained a 25-17 advantage in the final period.. Alex Erickson scored nine of his 15 points in the fourth quarter, and teammate Kyler Wiegel scored seven of his 14.


Mitch Erickson added 14 points for the Redbirds.


Turner’s Reggie Cassimere held scoring honors with 21 points. Turner (8-12) led 13-9 after the first quarter.


Darlington plays at No. 2 seed Mineral Point (13-8) in a regional semifinal Thursday. That pairs into the Baraboo Sectional.

?n Marshall 87, Clinton 49—The host Cardinals raced out to a 27-point halftime lead en route to a Division 3 regional win.


Clinton (7-14) trailed by eight after the first quarter but was outscored 30-11 in the second period.


Andy Eliszewski paced Clinton with 10 points. Greg Haag and Mike Boebel scored 16 points apiece to pace the Cardinals (12-8).


Capitol North champion Marshall (12-8) hosts runner-up Waterloo (16-4) in a regional semifinal final game that is part of the West Allis Central Sectional.

Scott Henrich scored 10 points for No. 2 seed Watertown Lutheran (14-6). Palmyra-Eagle did not have player reach double figures.


Watertown Lutheran will host No. 3 seed Deerfield (15-6) on Thursday.

n Williams Bay 52, Maranatha 38—Joel Brellenthin scored 10 of his game-high 15 points in the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs held off Maranatha (6-13) in a Division 4 regional opener.


The 10th-ranked Trailways South champions (19-2) host Faith Christian on Thursday night in a regional semifinal game. The winner battles Burlington Central (14-7) or Juda (10-1) at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Edgerton for a berth in the Fort Atkinson Sectional.


Joel Martin added 13 points for the Bulldogs, and Ben Miller scored 10.

Josh Sass scored 13 of his game-high 35 points in the third quarter to lead Faith Christian’s charge. Sass scored 21 points in the second half. Faith’s Stephen Smith added 16 points for the game.


Josh Cameron scored 31 points to lead Oak Creek Parkway Christian (9-10). Tim Suminski added 11 points.


Faith Christian (14-7) plays at ninth-ranked Williams Bay (19-2) in Thursday’s regional semifinals.
