Waunakee’s stifling defense proved to be the difference Thursday night in a Badger Challenge showdown between the conference’s division champions.

The visiting Warriors (20-0), who won the North, held South champion Monroe (18-2) to 11 second-half points en route to a 41-31 victory.

Waunakee was ahead most of the first half, but Monroe’s 6-0 spurt in the final 1:46 gave the Cheesemakers a 20-18 halftime edge. The Warriors rebounded quickly with a 16-5 run to a 34-25 lead as they handed the defending WIAA Division 2 state champions their second loss in three games.

Ryan Staege and Jason Paulson scored 12 points each for the Warriors, ranked fifth in the state in Division 1.

Tony Cates was the only Cheesemaker to hit double figures, finishing with 11 for the second-ranked Division 2 team, which had a 33-game win streak snapped last Saturday at Freeport, Ill.
