Town of Beloit considers new facilities
BELOIT TOWNSHIP At some point, the town of Beloit will need a new fire department and administrative building.
But is now the best time?
The town board will take back up the discussion at its next workshop meeting at 4:15 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, at the town hall, 2871 S. Afton Road, Beloit.
“The buildings are needed, but are they really needed that badly right now?” said town board Chairman Greg Groves.
Angus Young architects of Janesville have given the board preliminary costs for a new town hall next to the police department on Inman Parkway and a new fire station next to the one at 2445 S. Afton Road, Beloit.
Based on previous construction projects, Angus Young estimates the administrative building would cost $1.37 million if built in 2009. The fire department would cost $3.34 million.
Those projects would increase the town’s levy by 22.5 percent, said Administrator Bob Museus. This year’s levy is $1.78 million.
The increase would mean about a $1 tax increase per every $1,000 of assessed value on a home in the town, Museus said.
The town avoided a tax increase in 2008, even though it is in the middle of building a new police department at 1143 Inman Parkway, Beloit.
The department will move into its new digs in May or June.

Maybe the fire department could go door to door and ask to check smoke detectors and then charge an administrative fee for each smoke detector in the residence.

Maybe they should come up with some more asinine 'policies' to generate more money from people they pull over.
