Monroe High School’s boys basketball team was back in form Monday night in the battle for the Badger South championship.

The host Cheesemakers (18-1), who had their 33-game winning streak snapped Saturday night at Freeport, Ill., took control in 29-21 first half and went on to a decisive 62-54 victory over visiting Verona.

While completing a 12-0 conference season to repeat as undisputed champion, the defending Division 2 state champions dropped second-place Verona to 10-2 and 15-4.

Monroe, which fell from No. 1 to No. 2 in this week’s AP Division 2 state ratings, carried its momentum over to a 19-11 third quarter included three-point goals and took a 48-32 lead into the final period.

The Cheesemakers’ Mitch Tordoff scored seven of his 21 points in the third quarter. Monroe’s Bryan Tordoff added 14 points, while teammate Tony Cates scored.
