Schools across southern Wisconsin have run out of snow days, meaning school will be in session into the second week in June for many area students.

The Janesville School District closed for a second day in a row today, setting a record.

The weather now has shut down the district four days this school year. District records going back to fall 1978 indicate that has never happened.

In fact, the district closed three times in a year only once in the past 29 years. Those days were all in January 1979.

The district can ignore the first snow day, but it has to make up the rest of them. That means students will have to make up three days, said district spokeswoman Sheryl Miller.

Miller said no decision has been made about when those days will be made up. Last year, the district made up one day by adding one at the end of the school year.

In other years, the district has subtracted a day from spring break.

The story is the same in districts throughout Rock and Walworth counties.

-- The Edgerton School District will make up one and a half snow days, likely extending the school year longer into June. Thursday was the districtís fourth snow day.

-- The Evansville School District will make up at least one snow day, likely by adding additional minutes onto the end of each school day. Thursday was the districtís fourth snow day.

-- The Milton School District will make up two snow days, possibly extending the school year further into June. Thursday was the districtís fourth snow day.

-- The Albany School District will make up three snow days, likely extending the school year to June 10. Thursday was the districtís fourth snow day.

-- The Brodhead School District will make up two snow days, extending the school year to June 9. Thursday was the districtís fourth snow day.

-- Big Foot Union High School will make up at least one snow day, extending the school year to the second week of June. Wednesday was the districtís third snow day.

-- The Fontana School District will make up one snow day but wonít extend the school year past June 6. Wednesday was the districtís third snow day.

-- Lake Geneva area schools will make up three snow days, extending the school year to June 10. Wednesday was the districtís third snow day.

-- The Walworth School District will make up at least one snow day, likely extending the school year past June 12. Wednesday was the districtís third snow day.

-- The Whitewater Unified School District will make up four snow days, extending the school year longer into June. Thursday was the districtís fourth snow day.

Students in only a handful of districts wonít have to worry about a longer school year unless weather closes schools again.

The Delavan-Darien School District, Elkhorn Area School District and Williams Bay School District donít have to make up snow days. Wednesday marked the third time the districts called off school.
