Bluebirds rebound with victory over Waupun

— The Janesville Bluebirds bounced back from Monday’s first loss of the season in a Big Eight game against Madison Memorial to notch a 5-3 victory over visiting Waupun in nonconference high school hockey here Tuesday.

Aaron Jacobson scored four goals, including a hatrick in the third period, to help lift the fourth-ranked Bluebirds to 15-1-2.


Janesville was cruising along with a 4-0 lead in the third period, but Waupun scored three straight goals to make it 4-3.


“It’s 4-0, and you’re thinking it’s time to get more guys in the game,” Bluebirds coach John Mauermann said. “As the period went along, things got away from us.’’


Aaron Jacobson came to the rescue, scoring his fourth goal and third of the period on a power play at 12:40 for the winning margin.


“Aaron was in the right place at the right time,” Mauermann said. “He put it away to finish off the scoring.”


Jacobson gave Janesville a 1-0 lead at 3:13 on assists from Zach Bayreuther and Jarrod Hilmer. Kenny Durfee put Janesville up 2-0 on with an assist from Hilmer in the second period.


Jacobson scored twice in the first 94 seconds of the third period to put Janesville up 4-0. Waupun’s Justin Anderson, Joey Dolgner and Wade Williams.


The Bluebirds travel to Madison Memorial for an 8 p.m. rematch on Thursday, which will give a second chance to clinch a tie for the Big Eight championship.
