Vernon leads Warhawks past Blugolds

— UW-Whitewater pounded UW-Eau Claire 85-65 to remain tied with UW-Platteville for first place in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men’s basketball race.

The Warhawks (16-3, 9-2) never trailed. Eau Claire managed a 21-21 tie, but Whitewater launched a 19-0 run for a 40-21 lead with 2:43 to play in the first half.


Kori Vernon, a junior, scored a career-high 21 points to pace Whitewater. Kevin Koski scored a career-high 15 points, while teammates Matt Goodwin and Myles McKay scored 12 and 10 points respectively.


Whitewater held a 16-point advantage from the foul line, making 25 of 43 free throws to Eau Claire (10-10, 4-7) was 9 for 15.


Whitewater will play at Luther College for nonconference game Wednesday.

n La Crosse 62, Superior 53—At La Crosse, Chris Fehrenbach sank three three-point goals to become La Crosse’s career three-point leader with 209, breaking the record of 206 held by Casey Taggatz.


Fehrenbach led the Eagles (10-10, 5-6) with 21 points, finishing eight-of-12 from the field, including three-of-six from three-point range. Shane Manor led Superior (8-11, 4-7) with 13 points.


n Platteville 71, River Falls 60—At River Falls, Jeff Skemp recorded his 10th career double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds, while Curt Hanson had 16 points and Charlie Lohoff 14 to lead the Pioneers (15-4, 9-2).


Deone Compton scored 11 and Courtney Davis 10 for the Falcons (7-12, 1-9).


n Oshkosh 73, Stevens Point 61—At Oshkosh, the Titans jumped out to a 7-2 lead and did not relinquish the lead the rest of the way.


Khalifa El-Amin led the way for Stevens Point (14-4, 6-3) with 14 points. Jordan Johnson led the Titans (13-5, 7-2) with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
