Parker wrestlers win Big Eight meet
The Vikings picked up a fourth straight Big Eight title Friday night, thanks to two conference individual champions and a superb consolation round.
Parker trailed dual meet champion Beloit Memorial after the first two rounds, but stormed back in the consolation round en route to the title. The Vikings finished with 231 points, while the Purple Knights were second with 222.5.
Janesville Craig, behind champion Siven Furseth, was third with 177.
Parker’s Ryan Holden, who improved to 27-0 in winning his second straight title at 112 pounds, said the Vikings were focused on repeating all week in practice.
“This means a lot because I think most people thought Beloit was the team to beat,” Holden said. “I was a little worried after the first couple rounds, but everybody picked it up after that.
“The seniors won the conference tournament every year. So that’s pretty special.”
Holden had no trouble winning the 112-pound title. He pinned Craig’s Jamie Kumlien in the finals in 2:53 and will enter WIAA regional competition focused on a state berth.
“Last year, I looked past a couple of opponents and ended up not making it to state,” Holden said. “That’s not going to happen this year.”
Parker’s other champion came at 140 pounds. Senior Alex Folk completed an unbeaten conference season with an 8-2 decision over Madison East’s Clay Bair in the title bout.
The Vikings’ Joe Ramirez (145) and Harold Lloyd (285) lost in their title bouts. Ramirez fell 10-4 to Beloit's Jose De La Berrera, while the seventh-ranked Lloyd (24-2) lost 13-7 to the Purple Knights’ Alex Polizzi. It was Lloyd’s the second loss this season to Polizzi.
Furseth was pushed in his title match at 103 but held on for a 4-3 win over Sun Prairie’s Chase Steiner. The freshman, ranked fourth in the state in Division 1, improved to 33-0.
“As long as I win, that’s the most important thing,” Furseth said. “We know each other so well that it’s hard to wrestle against him (Steiner), because we know each other’s moves.”
Parker’s Evan Cavey had a chance to repeat as conference champion, but the sophomore lost an 8-2 decision to top-seeded Mike Piazza of Madison West.
Besides Kumlien, Craig got runner-up finishes from four others. Jesse Davila (135), Trevor Gregoire (171), Blair Kessler (189) and Alex Burdick (215) advanced to the finals but lost by decisions. Parker senior Joe Ramirez finished second at 145.
Janesville Parker 231, Beloit Memorial 222.5, Janesville Craig 177, Middleton 143.5, Sun Prairie 119, Madison West 106.5, Madison East 77, Madison Memorial 66, Madison LaFollette 63.
