— With Beloit Memorial taking a surprising 15-8 first quarter lead, it was clear that something was missing from Janesville Parker’s girls basketball team.

Fortunately for Parker High, its missing link turned up with a vengeance in the final three quarters.

After going scoreless in the first period, junior guard Catie O’Leary racked up 20 points the rest of the way to lead Parker to a 50-43, come-from-behind Big Eight victory over the Purple Knights here Friday night.

Alex Klawitter also added 11 points to help top-ranked Parker (15-1, 12-0) remain one game ahead of second-place Middleton in the conference race.

“Beloit was sky-high to play Parker, like they always are, and they made some shots and did some things. And we had some shots that didn’t go down,” Parker coach Tom Klawitter said. “But what it all came down to was that we just battled harder than them and wore them down.”

Beloit appeared to be wearing down the Vikings early in the first quarter. Briana Carroll stunned the Parker crowd with an early six points to push the Purple Knights ahead 8-0.

Meanwhile, Parker’s offense appeared to be in neutral after managing just one field goal in the first quarter.

The Vikings’ woes continued into the second period, when Beloit opened a 19-10 lead.

O’Leary finally gave Parker a jolt with seven second-quarter points, including a three-pointer at the buzzer that gave the Vikings their first lead of the game, 21-19.

“Catie did a good job of keeping her cool and persevering and letting the game come to her tonight,” Klawitter said.

The “cool” O’Leary piled up eight more points during a 15-3 run that pushed Parker’s lead to 35-25 in the third quarter. Beloit never drew got than seven the rest of the way.

“I thought that the way we battled back was pretty special,” Klawitter said. “After the tough game Tuesday night, I’m sure that was still in the back in their minds, but the bottom line was they came through and did a good job.”

Carroll led Beloit with 17 points, while Brianne Monahan added 14, but the Purple Knights fell to 3-9 in the Big Eight.
