— Joe Allen scored an unassisted goal with 37 seconds remaining to give the Janesville Bluebirds a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Milwaukee Marquette in nonconference hockey here Saturday night.

After Janesville won a faceoff, Allen took the puck and fired from the slot to hit paydirt.

“There were bodies all over the place, and their goaltender couldn’t see the puck,” Bluebirds coach John Mauermann said. “For once, the puck didn’t hit anybody.’’

After Marquette opened a 1-0 lead with power play goal in the first period, Janesville’s Tom Tralmer answered with a power play at 14:34 to tie it.

Marquette gained a 2-1 lead at 3:23 of the second period.

Janesville killed a 5-on-3 opportunity, then capitalized on its power play with Ross Mauermann scoring on assists from Zach Bayreuther and Derek Mussey to tie it 2-2.

“We killed a power play,” John Mauermann said. “We got our own 5-on-3 and we scored. That was the game right there.”

Fifth-ranked Janesville improved to 14-0-2 overall.

“They were a big team and pounded us hard,” Mauermann said. “I have to give our kids credit for meeting the challenge.”

The Bluebirds host Madison Memorial at 8 p.m. Monday.
