— Does the City of Parks have enough parkland?

Are the parks and open spaces properly maintained?

Should the trail system be expanded?

These and other issues might be aired as the city updates its Parks and Open Space Plan.

City staff wants to hear from the public at a meeting scheduled from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in council chambers.

The city has had a parks plan since the early 1970s, and it was last updated in 1998, said Duane Cherek of the planning department.

“It just makes good sense to have a document that provides an inventory of all the city’s parks, open space and recreational facilities and defines how the city’s system of parks and facilities correspond with national standards,” he said.

“In the city of Janesville, we certainly significantly exceed those national standards in almost all categories. We should for being the City of Parks,” he said.

The plan will include recommendations on future acquisitions, maintenance and development, especially as the city grows.

The city sent surveys to about 70 recreation-related groups, such as the Friends of Riverside Park and the Rock Trail Coalition.

Members of the public are encouraged to fill out a survey and/or attend the meeting.

The survey asks, for example:

-- What are your suggestions for improving or maintaining your park/recreational area of interest?

-- What types of new trails, parks, open spaces and recreational facilities would you like to see in Janesville?

-- Are there existing parks and recreational facilities that do not meet the needs of the community?

The group might discuss the purchase of more riverfront land, a concept residents have generally supported, Cherek said.

Discussion might include the future need for a regional park as the city grows, possibly on the north and south sides. Perhaps, with planning, the city could work in conjunction with Milton, Beloit or the county to provide regional open space, Cherek said.

The plan will be brought to the plan commission and then the council for approval.

It will be used as a guide and will help prioritize acquisitions and development, Cherek said.
