JANESVILLE Crossing guards in Janesville, Clinton and Milton will have a stronger presence in the crosswalks starting next year, thanks to donations from local organizations and businesses.
Twenty-one electronic flashing stop signs were scheduled to be presented today to the Janesville Police Department, for use by every adult crossing guard in the city.
Four more of the signs will be presented for use in Milton and Clinton.
The presentation was set for 3:30 p.m. at Lincoln Elementary School, 1821 Conde St., where a flashing sign first went into use in the city.
The first flashing sign for crossing guards appeared in Janesville last spring. It came from a memorial donation given in the memory of Elmer Lipke, a former Lincoln K-Kids adviser.
Lincoln students felt safer with the flashing sign and so sought help to raise money for the entire city, according to a news release from the school district.
The groups contributing to the project were the Lincoln Elementary K-Kids, Roosevelt Elementary K-Kids, Edison Middle School Builders' Club, Janesville Noon Kiwanis, the Blackhawk Golden Kiwanis Club, Sam's Club and Wal-Mart.
Janesville police expect to distribute the signs to crossing guards in January.
