LA CROSSE The No. 10-ranked UW-Whitewater wrestlers upset No. 5-ranked UW-La Crosse, 28-13, in a WIAC dual meet here Tuesday.
The Warhawks’ victory over 11-time defending conference champs was first since the 1990-91 season—a string of 17 consecutive matches.
In key matches, Whitewater’s Austin Bautista, ranked No. 1 by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, improved to 9-0 with a 10-3 decision over Kevin Barber. Teammate Jon Schmidt improved to 7-0 with a win over Dan Laurent, the defending NCAA Division III champion and top-ranked wrestler at 285.
Whitewater's Karl Voeck upset No. 6-ranked Andy Moore, 13-3, at 197 pounds to improve to 11-1.
The Warhawks are 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the WIAC. La Crosse is 9-2 and 1-1.
