Brodhead city clerk to serve suspension
BRODHEAD The Brodhead City Council has imposed a three-day suspension effective Dec. 17 on city clerk/treasurer Nancy Schoeller for personnel issues, Mayor Doug Pinnow said.
The council met in closed session Monday night and acted on recommendations from the city's personnel committee, he said.
The action is a result of issues in completing and working with the audit team from Reffue Pas Jacobson & Koster LLP of Monroe on the city's 2007 audit, said Shelly Kuhl, chair of the personnel committee.
"(Schoeller) had deadlines, basically, that she didn't meet," Kuhl said, set by the audit committee, which oversees the clerk position.
Schoeller had no comment other than to say it should be understood "we have a very clean audit with no problems."
"The audit committee doesn't want this to happen again, so they are trying to react," Kuhl said.
The audit is complete, and Kuhl said she feels Schoeller does a capable job.

I personally don't believe that just because a person has a neat office that they are more competent in their job. Many people file away everything but never remember where they've put it. BUT this city clerk's office gives a whole new meaning to the work cluttered! This is a long time coming! Shame on the city council for allowing it to go on this long. As a person who supervises many people this situation reflects poorly on her superiors. She should have never been allowed to continue the habit when they moved into the new building. I remember when the city of Brodhead was trying to convince citizens of the need of a new city hall and one of the reasons was that there wasn't enough space. Tours were given and this city clerk's cluttered office was shown as an example.

Finally! Someone found a spine and took action! Deadlines might have been met if the clerk's assistant was taught to help out with some of the work. Whatever happened to the issue addressed years ago, to teach the deputy clerk how to run the place, especially if there was an emergency? Doesn't the City understand what would happen to City Hall if anything happened to the clerk? - That's what I call "job security".

4got10, My thought way back when they wanted to build the "new" city hall(and a senior center was also need)was to use the "old" middle school. What a beautiful piece of history that old building is. That could have housed City Hall, Library, Senior Center, all City offices, plus have a room or two to rent out for events or occasions! Think of all the possibilities it could have been used for! That would have even brought a bit of revenue in. Instead that piece of history is falling apart in front of us. "Oh, there's too much work that would need to be done to it, it wouldn't be 'cost effective'. Hmmm, now, How much was spent on the new city hall which still leaks, has ceiling chips falling, has a fake front 3rd story(who thought that looked good?)and a clerks office that is NOT taken care of, not to mention how much the library is costing, and not sure if a senior center ever found a home! All that money could have been put to GOOD use and refurbished the old school, saving history for many of the towns citizens! But our 'powers that be' spend, spend, spend, and to heck with the future or our past. Common Brodhead, wise up. Get that Clerks office CLEAN, and stop and think for a minute before you spend more money on wasteful things!

taysgranny hit the nail right on the head! Deadlines were probably missed due to the inability to find documents in the mess. I hope the "City Fathers" take her suggestion to get that office clean and organized. First we had to build a new police station so City Hall would have enough space. Next thing you know we built a new City Hall because.......well I don't know what excuse was given for putting up that monolith. I guess we just like to have new buildings and let other ones rot away (Think about the old City Hall, old Middle School, soon the old library). Since Brodhead likes to worry about appearances, they should start with the front office of City Hall.

"we have a very clean audit with no problems."
Have you ever seen her office? "Clean" is not what I would call it. It's no surprise there was a problem with an audit. More than likely couldn't not find all the required documents. In the old City Hall you couldn't see the floor or any desk due to papers, files, and who knows what everywhere. They spend over a million dollars to build a new City Hall and what do you have, another pig stye! There's papers stacked everywhere and it looks so utterly disorganized. That is the first office in city hall that people see and it's an embarrassment to all it's citizens. If the City Clerk can not keep the physical office clean, how can one expect her to keep anything else clean and organized? I suggest giving that office 30 days to clean up and be presentable, if it's not done, consequences should bestow them. Maybe this is a sign of incompetency in the position as a whole.
