— The superintendent of the Beloit School District has announced his candidacy for the office of state superintendent of public instruction.

Lowell E. Holtz was district administrator in the Palmyra-Eagle district before moving to Beloit in 2006. Over the past year, Holtz has been named a finalist for superintendent in the Kenosha and Oshkosh school districts. He also applied to a school district in Monroe, La., according to a news report.

Holtz said in a news release that he has served as a public school administrator in Wisconsin for 19 years. He was named state principal of the year in 1999.

The nonpartisan election is April 7.

Also running for the nonpartisan position are Tony Evers of Madison, the current deputy superintendent of public instruction, and Van A. Mobley of Thiensville. Mobley is a professor of history and economics at Concordia University Wisconsin.

The current state superintendent, Elizabeth Burmaster, is not running again. She appointed Evers to be her second-in-command after he ran against her when she first won the office in 2001.

This guy should try doing his job in Beloit before trying to move up. I had a representative from the company I work for spend time at BMHS for a career day. He came back and reported to us that out of a few hundred in the gymnasium, 3 students actually showed interest and didn't slowly read questions from a piece of paper.

If elected his first offical act would be to make his wife deputy superintendent of public instruction :)

This guy is a complete joke. The Beloit School District has been in shambles since he took over. Best case scenario is the district faces budget cuts of 1.5 million next year. Worst case is almost 5 million in cuts. Had he not resigned, he would not have been renewed by the school board!

Oh...my....Goodness!!! This is the most hilarious thing I have ever heard!! This man MAY have been a good principal in little Palmyra-Eagle or wherever, but he is not a good superintendent for the Beloit Schools. They are in HUGE budget cuts right now w/o all the industry losses like Janesville. Wonder why?? SOme of the decisions he has made have been ridiculous. And people skills???? YIKES!! There is a good reason he didn't get those positions in Kenosha or Oshkosh. I would bet they actually sent representatives to Beloit to ask those in the trenches how he was doing. I would vote for ANYBODY besides him for state superintendent.
