Janesville Smart Growth moves forward
JANESVILLE The city plan commission gave a nod Monday to the city's Smart Growth plan.
But the vote is advisory to the city council, it wasn't unanimous, and it's not yet clear if another committee will have a chance to weigh in before the council takes action on the plan.
After two years of work by city staff, the council had intended to vote on the plan in January. But Tom McDonald, council member and chairman of the relatively new sustainability committee, said the committee needs more time to review the plan.
Council President Amy Loasching said this morning she is in favor of delaying a vote on the Smart Growth plan, but she said she would talk to the rest of the council before putting off the vote.
"I think it's our obligation to say, 'Please look at this also and let us know what you think,'" Loasching said. "I think it (the sustainability committee) needs to be incorporated into the process now that we've established it."
The state mandates Smart Growth plans to map out long-term goals for transportation, housing, land use and other development issues. The state requires cities, villages and towns to have plans in place by Jan. 1, 2010.
