Parker High won eight of eleven events, swept three races and Michelle Kortyna had a hand in four of the victories as the Vikings blasted Beloit, 111-58, to open the 2008 girls swimming season with a Big Eight Conference victory.

“It’s a great way to start the year,” Parker head coach Andrea Nickel said. “I couldn’t ask for a better way to get it going.”

Kortyna, the only double individual winner for the Vikings, came home first in the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke. She swam a leg on Parker’s winning 200 medley relay team with Jenna Miland, Bridget Kortyna and Megan Olin. She swam a leg on the winning 400 freestyle relay team with Sam Witek, Samantha Anacker and Bridget Kortyna.

“Michelle had great times and was pushing on her lifetime best times, which is unbelievable for this early in the season,” Nickel said.

The Vikings posted 1-2-3 finishes in the 200 individual medley, 100 butterfly and 100 breastroke. Miland took the breastroke and Erin Jensen got the win in the butterfly.

The onlyy other individual winner for the Vikings was Olin in the 50 freestyle by less then three-tenths of a second.

Parker made it a sweep of the relays as Bernie Sanderson, Miland, Witek and Olin edged Beloit by a half-second. Olin’s final leg pulled the Vikes to victory.

“Megan’s final turn helped her get the lead,” Nickel said.

The Vikings will be back in the pool today when they host the Parker Relays at 11 a.m..
