Craig wins, Parker falls in Big Eight tennis

So far so good for Janesville Craig High School’s girls tennis team.

The Cougars blanked Beloit Memorial, 7-0, at Palmer Park on Thursday afternoon to improve to 2-0 in the Big Eight Conference.

Craig lost only one set in seven matches, including a 6-0, 6-0 win from Kelly Collins at No. 4 singles.

“Everybody did a nice job today for us,” Craig coach Camilla Owen said. “We played some good tennis and got a chance to work on some things.

“I’m pleased with where we are at, but Saturday will give us a better idea of where we are at. The competition picks up on Saturday.”

Craig hostd an invitational on Saturday at Palmer Parker that includes Janesville Parker, Madison La Follette, Stoughton and Oregon. Play begins at 8 a.m.

CRAIG 7, BELOIT 0

Singles—Niki Westenberger (JC) def. Kathleen Murphy, 6-2, 6-4; Nicole Gutzman (JC) def. Mary Mueller, 6-0, 6-1; Nicole Timblin (JC) def. Katelyn Kirkpatrick, 6-2, 6-1; Kelly Collins (JC) def. Cristal Kryshak, 6-0, 6-0.

Doubles—Hailey Smith-Taylor Storbakken (JC) def. Taylor Toubl-Katrina Tijerina, 6-1, 6-2; Olivia Ehlers-Emily Reshower (JC) def. Sarah Morgan-Alexis Anderson, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1; Maggie Bolton-Laudan Rezai (JC) def. Twinkle Patel-Kim Kingslien, 6-0, 6-1.

Junior varsity—Craig 7, Beloit 0.

n East 7, Parker 0—Madison East’s defending Big Eight Conference champions lost only one set en route to a victory over visiting Janesville Parker.

Parker’s No. 3 doubles team of Lauren Rucks and Becca Phetteplace won the first set in a 7-2 tiebreaker but dropped the final two sets.

“All three of our doubles teams had a chance to win, but we couldn’t pull out in any of them,” Parker coach Bill Peyer said. “In singles, we came up short against some pretty good players.

“East is obviously a very good team, and this is a good gauge for us this early in the season. We’ll see how we respond.”

Parker, 1-1 in the conference, competes in the six-team Janesville Craig Invitational on Saturday at Palmer Park.
