WCLO's Beth Wheelock reports on the budget reductions that bring the tax levy increase to 3.7 percent.
Through a series of voluntary budget cuts, the Janesville School Board reduces the district's property tax levy from 8.9 percent to 3.7 percent.
Several school board members previously requested a list of reductions that wouldn't impact student learning in order to bring the tax levy increase down. The reductions themselves total $740,000, with additional alternative funding options to equal the 3.7 percent levy increase.

Yeah the kids are going to suffer because the school board took away money to fix the potholes in the parking lots. Geez enough with the whole it's for the children ploy. It's really old.

Amen. Grandstanding, showboating and ego stroking by Board members would have been more appropriate cuts. At least we can all rest easy because Commissioner Murray's poor mother will be able to stay in her house one more year.

Our school board members need to take a step back and remember that they are just that, school board members. Their job is not to reduce the tax levy, it is to provide a quality education for the children of janesville. These cuts were unnecessary and will impact our students and teachers. Please school board members, start putting our children, not the taxpayer first, that is why you were elected. Political agendas and worrying about the tax levy should be left to the city council. It's unfortunate that those whom we have elected and trusted with our children's futures aren't doing what's in the best interests of our children. Instead they seem to be doing what's in the best interest of getting them elected for another term.
