Craig, Parker tennis teams breeze in league openers

JANESVILLE — The Big Eight Conference season got off to a rousing start Tuesday for the Janesville Craig High girls tennis team.

The Cougars blanked Sun Prairie, 7-0, at Palmer Park as coach Camilla Owen’s team did not drop a set in seven matches.

“We worked on some strategy in practice Monday and the girls came out and executed it today,” Owen said. “Hopefully, we can keep building from this.

“It’s always nice to start the conference season with a win. It was a great day to play and winning makes it that much better.”

Niki Westenberger, Nicole Gutzman, Nicole Timblin and Kelly Collins won at singles for the Cougars. Gutzman, who is coming off ACL surgery, improved to 5-1 on the season.

Taylor Storbakken and Hailey Smith won at No. 1 doubles, while Olivia Ehlers and Emily Reshower were victorious at No. 2. The No. 3 doubles team of Maggie Bolton and Lauen Rezai rounded out the sweep for the Cougars.

Craig welcomes Beloit on Thursday before hosting the Cougar Invitational on Saturday.

Parker blanks Beloit

Janesville Parker High blanked Beloit, 7-0, to open the Big Eight Conference dual meet girls tennis season on Tuesday.

“It went very well,” Parker coach Bill Peyer said.

Singles victories went to the Vikings’ Hilary Presti, Emily Sodemann, Lauren Brooks and Sarah Sodemann.

In doubles, Maddie Theisen and Kristin Zeilinger, Danielle Boyd and Kim Amundson and Lauren Rucks and Becca Phetteplace posted Vikings’ victories.

Parker will play at Madison East this Thursday at 4:15 p.m.
