JANESVILLE — Monroe High School’s girls tennis team upstaged the host Cougars in the season-opening Craig Invitational here Thursday at Palmer Park.

The Cheesemakers shut out Craig, 7-0, in the championship match of the eight-school team tournament.

Craig reached the title match with a 5-2 win over Jefferson. Monroe defeated Fort Atkinson in the semifinals.

Janesville Parker bounced back from first- and second-round losses to defeat Sussex Hamilton, 4-2, in a rain-shorted match for seventh place.

The No. 1 doubles team of Pam Lehman and Melissa Hill led Monroe with a 3-0 sweep. Jefferson’s Beth Ganser, the WIAA Division 2 state runner-up last season, went 3-0 as the top No. 1 singles player.

Craig’s No. 1 doubles team of Hailey Smith and Taylor Storbakken went 2-1. The Cougars’ No. 3 team of Maggie Bolton and Laudan Rezai was 2-0.

Emily and Sarah Sodemann each went 2-1 at No. 2 and 4 singles, respectively, to lead Parker.

Craig hosts another invitational on Saturday that will include Monona Grove, Oconomowoc, Pewaukee, Waukesha West, Jefferson and Lake Geneva Badger. The Cougars begin Big Eight Conference action at home Tuesday against Sun Prairie, while Parker plays at at Beloit.
