— The playoff hopes continue to fade for the Beloit Snappers.

The defending Midwest League Western Division champions lost a third straight game Sunday in falling back to the .500 mark in the second half. Three teams are ahead of the Snappers (28-28) in the race for the two second-half playoff spots, including frontrunning Burlington, which is 33-21.

Clay Fuller homered with one out in the bottom of the 13th on Sunday to lead the Cedar Rapids Kernels to a 5-4 win.

Beloit took a 4-2 lead in the fourth on Ramon Santana’s seventh home run of the season, but the Kernels tied the game with two in the fifth before Fuller’s heroics in the 13th.

Blake Martin (1-2) suffered the loss and spoiled the strong start of Michael McCardell, who struck out eight in five innings of work.

Ben Revere tripled and drove in a run for Beloit, while catcher Greg Yersich had three of the Snappers’ 13 hits.

Game two of the three-game series is tonight.
