— John Zimmerman, Janesville Parker High School’s girls golf coach, thinks the Vikings will enjoy continued success this fall if they follow a three-step plan.

“Improve, compete and have fun,” Zimmerman said. “If we do those three things, we are going to have a great season.’’

The Vikings open the season in the Elkhorn Scramble on Thursday morning at Evergreen Golf Course.

Parker is coming off a 2007 season that will be hard to beat. The Vikings went 8-0 to win the Big Eight dual championshipe and added the conference tournament title to their trophy case.

The Vikings went on to win a regional title, but they finished a disappointing fourth in the sectional and out of the money for a state tournament berth.

Zimmerman is not letting the Vikings letter winners dwell on that disappointment.

“I don’t look back at last year,” Zimmerman said. “This is a new year.’’

Nonetheless, the Parker roster is filled with familiar faces.

The Vikings have the formidable 1-2 punch of juniors Katie Brossard and Molly Rozeboom. Rozeboom, a first-team all-conference choice, held a team-leading 44.2 average last season, while Brossard, a second team all-league pick, posted a 45.3 average.

Rozeboom and Brossard hit the summer tournament trail hard and have spent plenty of time on the practice tee.

“They both have put in a lot of work this summer,” Zimmerman said.

Also returning for Parker are juniors Kyrsten Klosowski, who played No. 5 last fall, and Danielle Applebee.

Sophomores Amanda Becker, who was at No. 4 last season, Ellary Nemetz and Jennifer Polglaze will bolster the roster. Zimmerman said Parker has four promising freshmen who could help.

Despite Parker’s success last season, Zimmerman knows his team must earn their stripes all over again.

“They have to go out and play,” Zimmerman said.
