Four veterans head Craig girls golf team
“We have four starters back,” Craig coach Mike Wesling said.
Juniors Sarah Sheldon, Kyleigh Fenton, Jennifer Beals and senior Katie Decker each helped the Cougars to a 6-2, third-place finish in the Big Eight Conference dual standings last season. Senior Elizabeth Reidenbach also is expected to contribute this season.
Fenton had a 48.8 average, while Beals shot 50 and Sheldon averaged 51.
“The three juniors have played varsity since they were freshman,” Wesling said.
Craig will find out quickly where it stands, with four meets in seven days, beginning with the Edgewood Invitational on Friday.
The Cougars have matches on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday next week.
“The thing about golf is you can’t learn the game in a couple of days,” Wesling said. “You have to practice.”
Wesling expects defending champion Janesville Parker to again rule the Big Eight.
“John Zimmerman (Parker coach) has them very interested, and he does a great job with them,’’ Westling said.
Wesling is comfortable with the Cougars coming into the new season.
“They like to play the game,” Wesling said. “They have been practicing and it’s the first time I’ve had girls play a lot in the summertime.’’
The Craig coach will wait and see if the work returns dividends.
“We have a lot of experience,” Wesling said. “We will see.’’
