Snappers treat big crowd to victory

— The Beloit Snappers delighted a home crowd of 3,247 with a 7-2 victory over manager Ryne Sandberg’s Peoria Chiefs in Midwest League baseball here Saturday night.

Beloit got a fast start with a three-run first inning as it moved two games over .500 at 25-23 in the Western Division’s second-half race. Mark Dolenc had a two-run triple and scored on Gregory Yersich’s single to give the Snappers a 3-1 lead.


After the Chiefs pulled witin 3-2 in the fifth, Beloit retaliated with a three-run sixth. Rene Leveret’s two-run with two outs was the key blow.


Beloit starter Steven Hirschfield (8-4) pitched seven innings, allowing runs on on four hits, in getting the win.


The Snappers and Peoria play Game 2 of their four-game series here at 2 p.m. today.
