Brett Favre gestures during his press conference at Cleveland Browns Stadium before an NFL exhibition football game between the New York Jets and Cleveland Browns Thursday, Aug. 7, 2008, in Cleveland. Favre was traded from the Green Bay Packers to the Jets earlier in the day.

— Brett Favre held up his new green jersey, hoping he made the right decision.

“To a certain degree, I don’t know what I’m getting into,” he said.

Favre’s summertime soap opera ended Wednesday night when the Green Bay Packers traded their iconic quarterback after 16 seasons to the New York Jets, who haven’t had a star of No. 4’s stature since the days Joe Namath was slinging passes.

“I’m here for one reason. Not to do commercials, Broadway all those things,” Favre said Thursday after joining New York for its exhibition opener in Cleveland. “I’m here to help the Jets win.”

It’s not certain when the three-time MVP will be ready to play. But he assured it will be soon.

“I’m a little out of shape, compared to the other guys,” said Favre, who winked while saying he looked forward to his first conditioning test with the Jets. “The last 24 hours have been crazy. This offseason has been bizarre. But I’m excited by this opportunity.”

Five months after a tearful goodbye to a Hall of Fame career, Favre, who won a Super Bowl title and set all sorts of records in 16 seasons before his acrimonious split with the Packers, is starting over.

He’s now part of a Jets team that went 4-12 last season and has been reduced to second-stringer status in New York behind the Super Bowl champion Giants.

Dressed casually in cargo shorts, a gray T-shirt and new white baseball cap bearing a green “NY” logo, Favre arrived at Browns Stadium a little after 6 p.m.

On his way to the Jets’ locker room, he recalled a few previous visits to Cleveland with the Packers before meeting with New York coach Eric Mangini, who is a year younger than his new QB.

Favre was then joined by Jets chairman and CEO Woody Johnson and general manager Mike Tannenbaum. During his drawn-out divorce with the Packers, Favre said he had been reluctant to speak with Tannenbaum because he was certain the GM would be able to sell him on joining the Jets.

“He’s convincing,” Favre said, drawing a smile from Tannenbaum. “I know this team had a lot of talent.”

Before the Jets received the opening kickoff, Favre and his new backup, Kellen Clemens, talked briefly on the sideline. Favre clutched a card containing New York’s offensive sets and after each snap, he discussed what transpired with quarterback Brett Ratliff, who in an instant went from raw rookie to teaching one of the game’s greats.

Favre, expected to practice for the first time Saturday, later played catch with Clemens during a severe-weather delay and hung around to watch the Jets rally for a 24-20 win. On Friday, Favre will be welcomed to New York by Mayor Michael Bloomberg during a morning ceremony at City Hall.

Farve’s eager to put his messy breakup with Green Bay behind him and so, too, are the Packers.

“It’s like a marriage that ends,” Green Bay president Mark Murphy said. “It happens. Neither party is at fault.”

That was Favre’s read as well.

“I think we’re probably both at fault,” he said. “I’m not going to blame one side or the other. A lot of things happened this season, a lot of shocking things. But at this point it’s irrelevant.”

For the moment, Favre brings the Jets publicity and perhaps a better chance to compete in the AFC East. His preference was to be traded inside the NFC North, preferably to Minnesota. When it became apparent the Packers wouldn’t do that, Favre was open to about anything to keep playing.

It only took a minute for him to be a hit in New York.

Already, his jersey is being scooped up by Jets fans who awakened Thursday morning to the news that the Mississippi country boy with the cannon right arm was on his way to the big city and its bright lights.

Told that 3,000 new jerseys had been sold online, he joked, “That’s all?”

Until the deal was announced, it appeared the 38-year-old might be on his way to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. But the Jets, who went to camp with Chad Pennington and Clemens battling to be the starter, persisted and landed Favre for a fourth-round draft pick in 2009.

Pennington, benched midway through last season, was released Thursday afternoon.

A draft pick is hardly a steep price for a player who holds league records in career yards (61,655), touchdowns (442), wins (160) and hasn’t missed a start in 275 consecutive games.

“We wish him the best,” Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. “There’s no ill feelings. He has a positive reputation within this organization.”

New York gave up a conditional pick for Favre. According to NFL.com, the selection would turn into a third-rounder if Favre plays in 50 percent of the plays this season, a second-rounder if he plays in 70 percent and the Jets make the playoffs, or a first-round pick if he plays in 80 percent and the Jets make it to the Super Bowl.

The Jets are hoping Favre can bring them some of the magic he created at Lambeau Field, a place where the sight of him dropping back into the pocket on a frozen Sunday and rocketing a ball downfield is as etched in Packers lore as legendary coach Vince Lombardi walking the sidelines.

Favre is coming off one of his most productive seasons, one during which he answered any doubts about whether he still had game. He passed for 4,155 yards, his most since 1998, and had 28 TDs with 15 interceptions. The arm strength was still there, and so was his ability to improvise and make something of nothing.

“I hope I can play at the level that I’ve always played at,” he said. “There’s no guarantees. There have never been any guarantees for me. It’s football and anything can happen.”

He led the Packers to the NFC championship, where they lost to the Giants in overtime. Favre’s final pass was intercepted, setting up New York’s winning field goal. That pick, a blemish on an otherwise brilliant season, may have haunted him and driven Favre back onto the field.

“I always wanted to be a Packer and I think I always will be a Packer,” he said. “I’m not a traitor, never will be. It’s business. It’s the way it works. I gave everything I could possibly give. I hope the Jets fans see the same thing.”

In New York, Favre will step behind an offensive line rebuilt during the offseason by the additions of free agents Alan Faneca and Damien Woody. He’ll have wide receivers Laveranues Coles and Jerricho Cotchery as his primary targets. He’s got a new playbook to learn quickly, and in the media capital of the work, he going to have to deal with more attention than he ever imagined.

“I haven’t played in New York. I’m a South Mississippi boy, but I know how tough the city can be and I know how great it can be,” he said. “It can be as good as you want to make it.”

After leaving the podium, Favre was asked if he would commit to New York for more than one year.

“We’ll see,” he said.

I have to question the front office of the Packer's organization for the way they handled the Favre ordeal. I guess we will never know what was said and who said what. I know that Brett Favre put the Packers organization back to the glory years. If it wasn't for Favre and Ron Wolf who knows where this organization would be right now. Favre is a great quarterback and history will prove that. The deal has been made and there is nothing we can do as Packer fans. We can sit and gorp about it or we can get behind Rodgers and root him on. I wish Brett the best and it will be fun to watch him play again as painful as it may be that he isn't with the Packers I will still watch. He wanted to play football and I'm glad he has that opportunity to do what he wants to.

What ticks me off the most is people who before the end of season last year were die hard packer fans and Favre fans who now are bad mouthing both because of what happened. Let me ask you this, how many times in your life did you make a decision to do something and then questioned yourself if you did the right thing or were ready to move on with your decision?
Favre is no different than most of us, if this was nothing more than just money he would have taken the money and ran, but it wasn't. All Favre wants to do is play football nothing more, but someone decided that they did not want him to play football at least not in Green Bay. As someone wrote, we do not know exactly what was said behind closed door's and we can only assume what was said or talked about and we may never know what was exactly said. Favre's life since he was a kid has always evolved around football and can understand how hard that has to be to walk away from and I know that he is not the only sport star who has retired and has come back to play. In time we will know if the Packer organization made a mistake or not but until then it will be a wait and see situation.

Does anybody remember he was second in MVP voting last year and would have certainly hands down won his unprecedented 4th MVP award if it wasn't for an almost flawless season by the New England Patriots and Tom Brady at the helm. He threw 15 interceptions last year which isn't bad. Look at the interceptions that were thrown and see how many were tipped balls, receivers running the wrong routes etc. He had a great year and his comment about the jerseys was a joke.

Given a $4 subway token, an apple and a keychain by the NYC mayor.

I'll miss watching Favre play but I am glad the circus has left town so the Pack can start playing football.

Will the Packers be better in 2008 with Rodgers at QB than Brett? No. Will they be better in 2009 when Brett retires and Rodgers has a full season of experience? Probably. Five years down the road when this offseason bs is ancient history we'll know if Rodgers is the real deal and if the pick we received for Favre is any good. If Rodgers fails, Thompson's arrogant butt is on the line. If Rodgers plays well and the pick becomes a good player, Packer management will look good in all of this. This situation cannot be fully evaluated at this time because the Packers are thinking longer term than the Favre faithful. This needs time to play out. Go Packers. Go Rodgers. Good luck in NYC to Brett.

The Packer TEAM will be just fine without the quarterback that not only didn't dress in the same lockerroom with his teammates, but didn't make himself accessible to most of them during the week. The only reason Favre had a comeback season last year was because Ted Thompson put a nucleus of good players around him and Mike McCarthy was able to rein him in after years of Mike Sherman allowing him to do whatever he wanted. Without that support group around him in New York, and a head coach that is younger than he is, look for Favre to return to his '05 and '06 form--and the NY press will chew him up. Meanwhile, all Rodgers has to do is throw for 220 yards and hand off to Grant and the Packers will win 10-12 games and get to the playoffs.

Maybe I don't understand the whole story, but to ME it's the TEAM that makes the win, not just the QB. While very crucial to a team, a QB can't win a game without a good enough team to back him up. Brett might have a good arm, but that's no good if nobody's there to catch the ball.
*
I don't think Brett got the shaft - I think he made a decision last spring that he was done playing. That was a decision that involves more than just him. I'm glad the Packers wouldn't take him back, especially wanting to come back last minute and AFTER dispelling rumors all summer that he wanted to come back.

soside4life: I think it is very presumptuous of you to conclude that just because some fans are very upset about this that they are fair weather fans. I am aging myself here but the very first Packer game I ever watched was the Ice Bowl (it was too cold to go outside & play that day) and I have been a Packer fan ever since, not just a Brett Favre fan, but this is upsetting to me too. I proudly wore my Packers jacket the year the Bears won the SuperBowl even though living so close to the Illinois border I had to listen to all of the jeers. And of all the years I have been a Packer fan the most fun have been the last 16, is it any wonder that is so hard to give up? Geez just watching the footage of Brett's 1st game in 1992 when he won the game in the last 45 seconds with no time outs gave me goose bumps, it was like it was happening all over again. I will still always be a Packer fan but still I just don't see us going anywhere with Rogers & I cannot comprehend why any team NO MATTER WHAT would want to trade their best quarterback & their best chance at the Super Bowl. So don't blame any of us for being a little vindictive towards Packers management & hoping that this all blows up in their face. Like I said we won't be going anywhere with Rogers anyway so it will just be one of those dry & boring years.

Good luch Pack. Good luck Brett. Glad this nonsense is finally over.
Unfortunately, it is hard to see this ending well for either Favre or the Packers. Expectations are so unrealistically high for Rodgers that he will only impress the Favre faithful by surpassing what Brett did last season. Rodgers must get to the Superbowl or he will be viewed a failure. Anybody would crumble under such pressure. A Packer superbowl clearly won't happen with a first year quarterback.
Favre is 38. He is way out of shape. He needs to learn a new offensive system and terminology plus he must mesh with new teammates which requires time...something a 38 year old quarterback doesn't have much of.
I would love to see a Packers-Jets superbowl but twin 8-8 seasons is the greater reality.

Hey! I want Brett back in Green Bay too, but for selfish reasons. I'm not a Packers fan; I just don't want my New England Patriots having to play against a Brett Favre led Jets team twice during the regular season. *s* He may be older, mentally or not mentally prepared, past his prime, ready to kick butt on the field or whatever. The fact is, although he is the "enemy", he can still be a dangerous quarterback in the NFL. I'm not a fan of his but he certainly has my respect. Go Pats. Go Brett. Go NFL. "Tannenbaum, who said he had a “good” conversation with Favre, wouldn’t speculate whether the quarterback will play in New York beyond this season."
He's a Jet for only one day and the will I or won't I retire flip-flopping has started. That sure did not take long! Thank God he is their problem now!!!

Favre Fans, make sure to get your tickets to the game at Giants Stadium so you are not looking for a football game in a construction site that the Jets AND Giants will not occupy until 2010.

A year ago a Green bay Packer legend retired. And no this legend hasn't asked to come back. The packers were under this legends eye for about 30 years and he did a fantastic job. God only knows that we could use him back once again. This type of fiasco wouldn't have happened on his watch....Have a great retirement Bob Harlan

At 38 Brett's going to have to prove himself all over again. With all the young guns coming for him it's going to be interesting to see. In Green Bay he was an idol and we put up with his 3-4 interceptions for each touchdown, but will New York do the same??!! I think not !! I see 1-2 mediocre seasons and then the retirement question will raise it's ugly head once again.

"The Jets are in the largest market in the NFL and this will help Brett fill his overblown ego with all the media and bright lights."

Like he didn't get media and bright lights in Green Bay? Come on! You seriously think he will get more attention from the media in NY than WI?? That's just silly. Larger market, maybe. But in WI, he was treated like the legend that he is, by fans and media alike. That's not what this was all about.

After listening to the Packers press conference earlier today, it was obvious they never intended to hold an open competition for the starting position---only for $12M backup. No wonder Brett didn't trust them---he had good reason! Read the story posted by Gene Wojciechowski on ESPN.com around noon today at
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/columns/s......

Compare the Pack for the 20 years before Brett to the past 16 years...we owe a lot to his skills and enthusiasm. I will continue to follow him, too, and I am a fan of the Packers players, but Thompson and McCarthy are liars. Thompson has been trying to get rid of Brett since he arrived in GB because he wants HIS name as the hero of the team. We really could use Ron Wolff back.

Probably because Brett and his agent had been talking about a come back and the agent knows the GM for the Jets. The agent will get a % of Brett's salary when he signed. The Jets are in the largest market in the NFL and this will help Brett fill his overblown ego with all the media and bright lights. Take Farves advise, "I am moving forward." You should too!

biggirl, I agree with you. I feel so torn right now because I know Brett got the shaft. I told a friend of mine I am going to create my own shirt, half green and gold and other half, whatever Brett is wearing. So, I am a packer fan, but I will be cheering Brett on. How can I not? He has been our golden boy for 16 years. And no, we are not fair weather fans to those of you who are calling us such. We have stuck by the pack through thick and thin these past how ever many years. But, what the management has done to Brett stinks. I, for one, will still support and root for him.

Seems the Packer brass was lying all along. Brett just said in his press conference with the Jets that he was told to contact the GM of the Jets a month ago. So much for Mike and Ted saying they welcomed Brett Back. They outright lied. Best of luck to Brett no wonder you didn't think you could play for the Packers they were lying to you all along. For those who say that people who love Brett are not loyal Packer fans, I'd just say that you're confusing loving management and their decision with loving the Packers. Brett has been the most loyal and true Packer, and he made it plain that he wanted to remain a Packer. Where was Ted Thompson in all of this? Notice he was absent from all talks until it came to talks about a trade. I really wish that he and the other management had respected someone who has given his blood, sweat, and tears for the Packers. Bye, bye, Brett, and good luck. I feel blessed to have seen you, and I look forward to seeing you play in the future.

The Jets have a few stud receivers, good coaching, and have made some good off season moves. I think Brett will get the Jets above the 500 mark and, with some luck, a wild card spot. I don’t think Farve will play long enough to see a Super Bowl with the Jets. It’s a shame to see him move, but it seems as though he wanted to play for someone else to get a new start. Not sure if the Pack will be better or worse without him. I don’t think their regular season record will be as good, because Brett was solid during the regular season minus that Dallas game. However, if they make the playoffs, I don’t see Rodgers throwing such horrid interceptions. I’m still not sold on Rodgers. I think he might be decent, but he’ll get hurt frequently, which can be a problem. Packer fans should never have spite towards Farve though. This guy has been core of the Packers and a major reason for their success for the last 17 years. Those who remember the awful Packer teams in the 80’s will understand my point. The Packers were lucky to have him so long considering the Pack is a small market team.

Nobody wants to work for someone who doesn't want them around. Regardless of the public statements made by Ted Thompson, he's wanted Favre gone since he drafted his love child Aaron Rodgers. Well, now Ted gets his wish. I hope it works out, but with Aaron's history of hangnails and stubbed toes, it could be a long season. It really comes down to what is best for the team, and Favre gave the Packers the best chance to win games. If Rodgers can't get the job done, he and Teddy could be unemployed come January.

Funny how this is somehow managements fault. Brett clearly lied (something he blames Packer mngt for) when asked in early June if he was contemplating coming out of retirement - he said; "that is clearly a rumor". All you have to do is look at the timeline of this whole thing and it is quite funny. The Packers wanted a committment out of him, and all he could say is: "I think I want to return". He even admitted it on Greta's show. Never once did he say:"I want to play". No wonder the Packers were sick of being held hostage by him. Bottom line, I am a more loyal Packer fan than the whole Brett Favre saga. I am sure this incedent will weed out the Packers fans who only are fans because of Brett Favre. I might even now be able to get a ticket! Go Pack!!!
