Janesville 14s drop regional opener
A disastrous fifth inning spoiled the Ohio Valley Regional opener for Janesville’s 14-year-old Babe Ruth baseball tournament team.
Youngstown (Ohio) scored 10 runs in the bottom of the fifth en route to a 14-4 win over Janesville at Shelbyville, Ind. The game was called after five innings due to the 10-run rule.
Janesville falls into the loser bracket and will play the loser of Friday night’s Benton Harbor (Mich.)/Shelby County (Ind.) game at 2 p.m. CST today.
The loss marked the second straight year that Youngstown defeated Janesville at the Ohio Valley Regional. Janesville fought back from an early 3-0 deficit to tie the game at 4-4, but the wheels fell off in the fifth.
Trailing 3-0, Janesville got on the board in the third on Jameson Henning’s solo home run. The teams traded runs in the fourth before Janesville tied the game with two runs in the fifth. Cameron Wright’s home run cut the lead to 4-3, and Jarred Sperry tied the game with an RBI single that scored Dane Burman. Janesville had the bases loaded with one out later in the fifth but could not take advantage.
Jim Popio’s three-run homer in the bottom of the inning spearheaded Youngstown’s 10-run uprising. Youngstown finished with 12 hits off of three Janesville pitchers.
Burman started for Janesville and pitched effectively, according to Davey. He tired in the fifth and Youngstown took advantage.
Burman and Tyler Chase each had two of Janesville’s eight hits.
