— Joe Dye and Dave Lehmann weren’t ready to get the brooms out Tuesday night at Monterey Stadium.

But that didn’t keep the Janesville Parker High School boys and girls track and field coaches from celebrating a sweep over Janesville Craig and Madison West in a Big Eight Conference triple dual meet.

The Parker girls improved to 5-1 in the conference with an 80-61 win over Craig and an 123-17 triumph over West.

Parker’s boys moved to 4-2 in the league by beating Craig and West by the identical score of 80-61.

Craig’s girls beat West, 110-31, while the boys were victorious over the Regents, 79-62.

Shelby Demos won three events to pace the Parker girls. The junior raced to victory in the 100 high hurdles and the 300 low hurdles, and also remained unbeaten for the season in the high jump.

“Shelby did her usual thing for us tonight, and we needed that,” said Lehmann, the girls coach.

“I had to switch some people around tonight to make sure we could score points in certain events, and for the most part, we did that. That really paid off in the distance events. Nikki Bakke won the 3,200, and she hasn’t run that race all year.”

The Vikings swept all three relays, and also got a key win from Erika Whitson in the triple jump.

Nikki Scieszinski starred for the Craig girls. The senior won the 100, 200 and 400 to help the Cougars stay close until the final two events.

“Nikki had a great night,” Marsden said. “You don’t usually see someone win those three events. That’s asking a lot.

“As a team, I was really happy with the way we performed. Considering where we are at with injuries, we really came to compete and kept the score close against a good Parker team.”

Other individual winners for Craig were Desiree Metcalf in both the discus and shot put; Cassidi Running in the 1,600; Abby Mayer in the pole vault and Lauren McQueen in the long jump.

Riley Grafft (high jump) and Cody Speaker (pole vault) were the only individual winners for the Parker boys, but the Vikings swept all three relay races to hold off the Cougars on the scoreboard.

“It was a total team effort tonight,” said Dye, the boys coach. “And Duncan Brose sealed the deal for us by taking 30 seconds off his previous best time in the 3,200 to get us three points.

“Our vaulters did a nice job tonight, and so did our hurdle group. And I really thought our sprint relay teams made the difference.”

JoJo Pregont and Greg Pedersen each won two events to lead the Craig boys. Pregont, a junior, soared to victory in the long jump and triple jump. Pedersen, a senior and Michigan Tech football recruit, won the shot put and discus. His toss of 125 feet in the discus was a personal best.

Other winners for the Craig boys were Joe Kennedy in the 800 and Ryan Ahrens in the 3,200.

“We’re improving as a team, and our times are starting to come down,” Craig boys coach Jeff Deininger said. “It was a great effort from everybody.

“It was great to see Pedy (Pedersen) have his best throw in the discus. To have it come against Parker as a senior means you were really ready to compete.”

Craig and Parker will compete in the Cougar Relays on Friday at Monterey Stadium.
