— Madison La Follette has been a tough place for Janesville Craig High School’s boys tennis team.

That didn’t change Tuesday. The Lancers defeated the Cougars, 4-3, to drop Craig to 1-2 in the Big Eight.

“I challenged the players to play with their heart today,” Craig coach Gary Hallowell said. “Usually when we play La Follette, we have a falling off in effort. That obviously didn’t happen here today. They pushed La Follette to the limit.”

The deciding match turned out to be at No. 1 doubles, where La Follette’s Steve Amend and Truman Summ edged Doug Johnson and Ben Timblin, 7-5, 7-5.

“They had a 6-5 lead and broke our serve,” Hallowell said. “That’s kind of the story of the match. We couldn’t hold serve.”

Craig’s Ben Tanko won a difficult match at No. 4 singles with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 victory over Aaron Phier.

“Ben was actually down two set points in the first set,” Hallowell said. “He came through in the clutch.”

Craig hosts a quadrangular Saturday that starts at 9 a.m. on both the Craig and Palmer Park courts.
