— Contractors plan to start work June 16 to upgrade Powers Elementary School and the Turner middle/high school.

The work was approved April 1 when school district voters approved a $6.1 million plan to improve air handling systems, lockers, the auditorium and other aging equipment. District Administrator Dennis McCarthy expects the work to be done by fall 2009.

In the next few months, district officials will try to determine why voters shot down a second, $2.5 million plan to improve the district’s athletic facilities and buy land for a future expansion.

The majority of this summer’s work will take place at Powers, 620 Hillside Drive, Beloit. Summer school will take place at the high school, 1231 Inman Parkway, Beloit.

Workers will remove floor tiles and replace lockers at the adjacent middle school this summer.

The middle school will be left with a bare concrete floor for a year, but that’s preferable to having classes interrupted by work, McCarthy said.

“The point is to make sure that we impact our classroom space as little as possible,” McCarthy said.

McCarthy expects all the work in the auditorium and roof replacement at the middle/high school to be done this summer. The low bid for roof replacement came in at $137,000, Director of Buildings and Grounds Ralph Warn said.

Next summer, workers will remove asbestos from the ceilings and replace lighting, McCarthy said.

Summer school will be at Powers in 2009.
